Best Practices No. 31: logistics technology

09 Jan 2024

The newest issue of Mecalux’s Best Practices magazine is now out, brimming with the trends and technological innovations redefining the logistics landscape.

In this edition, we analyse how Mecalux solutions have helped companies from all sectors drive their logistics operations. One example in Spain is Wallbox, which has automated its Barcelona manufacturing plant to manage 43,700 boxes. Likewise, Patatas Meléndez has maximised its efficiency in Europe’s most modern fresh potato factory. In Slovenia, Steklarna Rogaška, a retailer specialising in crystalware for the home, has digitalised its logistics facility with Mecalux’s warehouse management system. As a result, it has streamlined the just-in-time manufacture of its glass items. Meanwhile, in South America, the Brazilian footwear multinational Alpargatas has equipped two warehouses with storage systems that enable the distribution of 1,500 orders a day.

In an exclusive interview, Matthias Winkenbach, Principal Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), explores the impact artificial intelligence (AI) will have on the future of e-commerce. We also interview Michael Burton, Customer Supply Lead at British Sugar’s Wissington (UK) facility. This sugar processing plant — Europe’s largest — was recently outfitted with automated storage solutions from Mecalux.

Best Practices magazine also delves into several specialised topics. These include a report on the potential of generative AI in the supply chain and an in-depth analysis from Harvard Business Review on how AI-fuelled companies create value in their businesses. Additionally, issue No. 31 contains research from Professor René De Koster (Erasmus University Rotterdam) analysing the latest technological advancements in warehousing. Moreover, a study by Carl Marcus Wallenburg (Otto Beisheim School of Management) and Michael Knemeyer (the Ohio State University) examines the trends that will shape the future of 3PLs.

The magazine also showcases the 3D Automated Pallet Shuttle, the Mecalux Group’s new robotic order picking solution. Designed with an electric shuttle car capable of moving inside storage channels and changing levels autonomously, this system is ideal for logistics facilities with large-volume inflows and outflows of palletised loads.
