Best Practices 29: supply chain automation and digitalisation

19 Jun 2023

In issue No. 29 of Best Practices magazine, we delve into how Mecalux’s Easy WMS warehouse management software has optimised the logistics processes of companies across several industries.

In this edition of the magazine, you’ll discover fascinating projects such as that of the online footwear retailer Zacaris, which utilises Easy WMS to efficiently fill and ship 3,000 daily orders to its online customers. You’ll also see how Unipro Group, a business specialising in DIY and electrical products, uses digitalisation to effectively manage 10,000 SKUs spread across two warehouses in real time. Another standout example is Rouje, a women’s fashion brand that has experienced a 20% rise in picking productivity thanks to Mecalux’s digital solution.

This issue of Best Practices also showcases warehouse automation projects carried out by various organisations. For instance, the bread manufacturer Panificadora de Alcalá produces over 1 million units of frozen products a day with the automated Pallet Shuttle system with transfer cars. Nippon Paint, meanwhile, has installed an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) for pallets connected to its production lines to manage 3,000 tonnes of automotive paint a year.

As logistics centres increasingly embrace automation, fostering human–robot interaction in warehouses has become a top priority. The magazine includes research from Germany’s Technical University of Munich and University of Cologne that reveals mechanisms for improving collaboration between warehouse operators and their new workmates: robots. Moreover, Yossi Sheffi, Director of the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, explores how robotics and AI are transforming and opening up job opportunities in his article “Better tools for people and teams in a technology-driven world”.

Lastly, this edition of Best Practices features a specialised article on food logistics management and a report highlighting real-life examples of companies leveraging technologies such as digital twins, autonomous intelligent vehicles, big data and cloud computing to maximise their efficiency and competitiveness.
